Professor Lynn Hertel was the first recipient of the Bachelor of Music degree in flute performance from the George Washington University, where she also recieved the Barry Manilow Scholarship. Following graduation in 1986, she pursued graduate studies in Europe, studying under Hansgeorg Schmeiser of the Wiener Musik Hchschule (Vienna, Austria). She studied conducting at the University of South Carolina's Institute of Conducting. Currently, she is studying The Alexander Technique with Marion Goldberg.

Prof. Hertel was on the faculty of the George washington University from 1988 to 2001 where in addition to her teaching responsibilities she conducted two flute choirs. Her flute instructors have included Ervin Monroe, Wallace Mann, Robert Willoughby and Wolfgang Schulz. During the summer of 1993, she returned to Vienna where she studied with Prof. Schulz.

Among her many freelance credits are appearances on NBC television at the White House, the Smithsonian, the Kennedy Center's Terrace Theatre and Millenium Stage, the US Department of State and many area recital halls. Prof. Hertel freelances frequently with area orchestras and chamber ensembles.

She is a member of the National Flute Association, is active with The Friday Morning Music Club and is a Life Member of the Flute Society of Washington. In 1995 she hosted master classes by both Paula Robison and Gunter Federsel (Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra) at the George Washington University. She also conducted Paula Robison in a Flute Orchestra concert held at The Lisner Auditorium. Prof. Hertel maintains a private flute studio in Arlington, Virginia.
